Infrastructure & System Support (ISS)

ISS Group Picture from Aug 2024

ISS is responsible for architecting, deploying and managing the supporting the data-centric HPC platforms using common shared infrastructure. The department manages three main research computing resources at the lab with a shared set of redundant core services: the SLAC Science Shared Data Facility (S3DF), the US Data Facility for the Rubin’s Observatory (USDF), and the Controls & Data IT System for LCLS (CDS).

2024 picture of S3DF in SRCF

S3DF is a heterogeneous compute, storage and network system designed to support the massive scale analytics required for a diverse range of experiments such as LSST-Rubin LCLS-II, CryoEM, and Fermi.  S3DF also serves as a greenfield for modern technologies: storage, containerization, interactive workflows, data management, identity and access. The S3DF infrastructure is optimized for data analytics and is characterized by large, massive throughput, high concurrency storage systems.
