Storage Systems Department
The Storage Systems Department (SSD), as part of the Scientific Computing Systems Division (SCS) within the Technology Innovation Directorate at SLAC, architects, deploys, and supports the multi-petabyte filesystems that SLAC’s research facilities and experiments use for their data-intensive workflows and computing pipelines. The department is responsible for developing and supporting a range of storage needs for the data-centric HPC platforms and services using common shared infrastructure.
SSD has a broad range of storage technologies we support, including an all-flash Weka based filesystem, a tiering, Ceph object storage system – one of the largest ever deployments of Ceph, Lustre and GPFS-based filesystems, and tape-based archival systems. We ensure that these storage systems are reliable, provisioned appropriately and are available to users of the SLAC Shared Scientific Data Facility (S3DF).
